Where did Amazing Grace come from?
We all know the well known song "Amazing Grace" but do we know the history?
Why did the writer chose to write these words?
Here I will explain:
Amazing Grace was written by a poet John Newton.
The song protrays a message of forgiveness and redemption.
Newton poured out his feelings about the Grace of God.
Who Was John Newton?
John Newton grew up with no religious background; he never learned about Jesus and the Gospel.
Newton was put into the "Royal Navy" barticipating in the slave trade.
One night a terrible storm ruined his ship.
Newton became so frightened that he found himself crying out to God for mercy.
That was when his conversion took place.
Later Newton was promoted to captain of the slave ship.
Captain of a slave ship is not an ideal job for a Christian. Is it?
Becoming captain of the ship allowed him to see what injustice was taking place.
Working as a tide surveyor Newton studied for the ministry and spent
the las 43 years of his life preaching the gospel.
At 82, Newton said "My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things, that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Saviour."
John Newton, once a sinner far from grace was touched by the power of God,
And his life changed forever.
Don't you think yours can too?
Words of Amazing Grace:
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come.
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
