How does an unbeliever let go of their past and decide to follow Jesus?
I was having a conversation with a friend today about salvation. She asked me "How do you believe in God/ How are you changed from an unbeliever to a believer?" So I told her in her case, she would need to "Let Go" but I had not thought about what letting go really meant. I then looked into the subject on a deeper level. I asked myself over and over again, "How does an unbeliever 'Let Go?'" "What does it mean to 'Let Go?'"
When an unbeliever is in the presence of true believers worshiping God, the worship becomes a witness to them. The way that you would speak to an unbeliever, telling them about the goodness of God is a witness. Worship is also a witness. The worship of the people witness to their spirits and the Holy Spirit convicts the individual or speak to the person's heart. Watching the worship of the saints they are now compelled to worship and they are now pricked in their hearts.
When I meditated on the words "Let Go" I realized that one of the key ways in which an unbeliever "Lets Go" is when they begin to worship God. The unbeliever has to understand what worship is and where it comes from. Although the person might see Christians worshiping God they still don't understand what is going on inside. We as Christians need to let the unbeliever know that worship is genuine from the heart. Worship comes from gratitude and thanks to God for the things He's done. Worship is admiration of God; Admiration of His Glory. The unbelievers need to understand that so that they can truly praise God from the heart.
Another way an unbeliever "Let's Go" is when they literally let go of their preconceived judgments and ideas and read God's word to discover the truth about these things. To believe in something or someone a person needs faith, it is essential. For this person to have faith they must read the word of God. The Bible says that "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word..."
To the unbelievers out there that are struggling to accept God for who He is and to believe in Jesus and His great gospel, you need to read the Bible. The Bible is the inspired word of God; It is filled with only truth. If you need understanding and truth you need to go to the Bible.
The last way that I'm gonna discuss is through prayer. Prayer is a conversation with God. Most people don't really know what prayer is, they believe that prayer is just speaking... It's not. Prayer is speaking to God and then listening back to what He has to say. If you need faith, pray for it.
How do you hear God?
There are many ways in which a person can hear the voice of God. To hear God you must really listen to Him. God doesn't always speak audibly so you need to recognize Him when He is speaking in a different way. You may be wondering ' Does God speak to me?' He does speak to you but you have to be still and listen to Him. Here are some of the ways that God speaks:
1. Through His Word
A common way in which God speaks is through His Word (The Bible.) [This is why you should read it.] You might have just prayed to God about a situation that you can't handle. One way in which He speaks back to you is through the Bible. You might be casually flipping through pages of the Bible and your eyes stop at a certain page. You read it and you realize that it is the solution to your problem. That is an example of how God speaks through His Word.
2. Through Other People
Another way He speaks is through His people. Maybe someone that you might not even know would walk up to you and tell you that Jesus Loves You. Maybe you were feeling down and you felt like no one cared but God wanted to tell you that He loves you.
3. Through His "Still small voice"
A lot of times God speaks a word into our spirits. Sometimes you will hear a small peaceful voice in your spirit. The voice of God speaking into your spirit is a lot like your conscience. He tells you a word of peace that will help you on your journey.
4. Audibly
This is rare but sometimes God does speak to you audibly. It is as if you can hear a literal voice speaking to you.
I challenge you to "Let Go" of your past and let God have His way in your life. He will do amazing wonders in your life but you have to trust Him and Obey Him. Listen to His voice and know that He has something important to tell you.
